Packmat - An Aesthetic Solution to Package Theft

By LaunchX team

April 25, 2020

As we head into the summer it's a great time to look back on the companies and entrepreneurs who have made up our previous cohorts! Packmat is a startup from LaunchX’s 2019 Summer cohort that promises “A simple and unobtrusive solution to package theft”. Targeted primarily to residential customers who live in highly populated or commercialized areas, Packmat uses weight sensors to alert customers of suspected package theft via a mobile app.

We interviewed the Packmat team, and here’s what they had to say about the inspiration for their product: “We hoped to create a user-friendly, weight-sensitive mat that will help protect your packages from porch pirates (people who steal boxes from people’s front porch). We also want to show people that you can protect your packages while still maintaining the aesthetics of your house.”

Here’s how customers would be notified about a package theft:

Packmat found that their largest challenge was identifying the target customer, but ultimately came up with the following persona:

Bio of Scott Bortle: Age 27

  • San Francisco

  • 4-5 packages per month

  • Residential area close to commercialized area

  • Tech-Savvy

  • Values convenience

The team was particularly proud of how they bonded and learned to work together in the short time 4 weeks they had together as a part of LaunchX’s MIT cohort, and had the following advice to share with other young entrepreneurs looking to create their own companies. “Be resilient and open-minded.  Don’t just pick your friends as co-founders but instead, pick people with complementary skills and compatible personalities. Picking the right team and the right market are the most important to success.”

And what is success, according to Patrick, Patricio, Steven, and Claire? “Success is making a difference in the world.”
