Coronavirus (COVID-19) 

 

April 10, 2020

The LaunchX team has been working around the clock to respond to challenges and consider contingencies while working within the limitations and guidelines of the latest recommendations.

Unfortunately, none of our in-person locations will not be moving forward this summer.  

On April 7, we announced that our Cambridge location was not moving forward, and we now must unfortunately announce that none of the locations will be moving forward.

We know the students were looking forward to their summer with us at LaunchX.  We were very much looking forward to it as well and are saddened to not be able to share it with them on campus this year.  These students are being provided the following options (the deadline to provide this decision is April 15):

  • LaunchX Virtual 

  • Refund of deposit / fees - deadline to provide logistical details for us to provide the refund is April 15.  We will refund credit cards, send bank wires, and mail checks within one week of receiving information (within one day for credit cards).  Please note that checks will be considered valid for 90 days past which time the payment will be considered non-refundable and no recourse will be given.

We recognize that these past few weeks have been challenging, but also a reminder of what it can mean to be an entrepreneur and a leader, plus we are all reminded of the power of the connections we have with one another.  We are so grateful for the amazing community of Launchies.  We look forward to seeing what they launch as companies this summer as they envision the way the world will be going foward.

We recognize that this year is posing a challenge and concerns for many students as they worry about things like travel or visas to join us for this summer.  With the safety and learning of our students at the forefront of our concerns, we are excited to announce the accelerated development of our latest program innovation: LaunchX Virtual.  

Note: all in-person summer programs are still moving forward as planned.   This is an additional offering.  If all in-person programs were to be cancelled, we would still offer the option of a refund.

The LaunchX Virtual Program delivers the same quality program experience and community in an online environment.  This isn’t just the interactive classes, simulations, and speakers. We’re also providing the mentors, check-ins, progress tracking of teams, and support for prototyping.  Your calendar will be semi-customized to your team and even to your role within the team, so that you get a more tailored experience. What’s more, we’re able to provide some pretty awesome speakers now that we’re less restricted by geography!

This has been a rapidly changing situation around the world that we have continued to monitor closely, making note of potential implications on the summer program operations and student needs.  We recognize that schools around the world, including our host universities, have shifted their spring semesters online. 

At this time, all summer programs are planned to continue as scheduled

We maintain close communication with our university hosts, and will continue to provide proactive and timely updates.  This situation continues to evolve very quickly, though safety will be our top priority as we continue to plan the summer experience.  We love bringing together these young entrepreneurs, and will make certain that they come together in a way that ensures both learning and safety.

We at LaunchX continue to closely monitor the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic (see below under "March 9, 2020 for our previous announcement"). As the situation changes rapidly, we continue to educate ourselves on the disease, how top universities and community events are responding, and the expected timeline of resolution given the new measures being put into place. 

We remain confident that our program will run this summer.  We continue to monitor the situation and will provide any updates should this change. We're more excited than ever to see what our young entrepreneurs create this summer, since every challenge presents new opportunities to entrepreneurs.  We know our students will rise to this occasion.

We at LaunchX are busily underway with planning for the summer program.  We know there has been a lot of concern regarding the coronavirus, so wanted to let you know how we’re handling preparations and communications to ensure the health and safety of all those involved with the program.  

We are a diverse program with admits from many different countries, with safety as a top priority.  Since diversity is a valued aspect of this program, we will continue to admit students from around the world, but closely monitor the outbreak and implement safety precautions.  These include a few preparations:

  • Tracking and following CDC guidelines

  • Tracking and following university guidelines

  • Staying in close communication with our university and residential partners 

  • Putting together suggestions for your preparation

 

Limitations on Participants

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), any travelers returning to the U.S. or coming for the first time from any country under a CDC Warning Level 3 are expected to self-isolate for 14 days, regardless of whether that direction is specifically given to them at the U.S. point of entry. Those Level 3 countries are currently China, Italy, Iran and South Korea, but there is a strong possibility that this list of countries will grow. Individuals who have transited these nations do not need to self-isolate if they did not leave the airport. If they left the airport or remained in the airport for more than 24 hours, self-isolation is required. 

LaunchX expects that all students and staff who meet this criteria—or, who have been exposed to the Coronavirus—will self-isolate for 14 days prior to coming to the program. We recognize that given the short duration of the program that this may mean planning ahead for travel.  Please note also that all visitors to the program (parents, siblings, etc.) are expected to follow the same 14-day self-isolation requirement. Many airlines are providing free flexibility in travel arrangements, plus we are looking into options of insurance for program fees and travel that we will send to admitted students when we have finalized this option.  

 

Summer Health Preparations

We’ve also been in close touch with our residential and university partners to ensure that we’re prepared for the summer.  Our locations have access to some of the top healthcare facilities, plus our staff are being trained on best practices in safety pertaining to this situation.  We will also be reminding students upon arrival to the program of basic protective measures against coronavirus per suggestions of the World Health Organization.

 

Ways You Can Prepare

Outside of your safety, preparation for the summer program is continuing as planned. We suggest you continue to stay abreast of news updates and maintain your health and safety in the coming months. Because it is cold and flu season, and this virus has similar symptoms, it is important to not make any assumptions and have any respiratory illness evaluated by a healthcare provider. 

The immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time, though the CDC has identified the following as at higher risk for serious illness with COVID-19: older adults and people who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease.  Please see the CDC website link for additional preparedness if one of these chronic medical conditions apply.We will provide suggestions of packing materials in the upcoming welcome materials for admitted students, though please note that we may publish suggested changes to our website.  Many airlines are offering flexibility free flight changes in light of the coronavirus outbreak - we suggest you book with one of these airlines so that you will have peace of mind if you need to make last minute adjustments, plus you may consider purchasing flight cancellation insurance.

At this time, we expect to be running the programs. We will not be offering refunds if you opt to cancel enrollment in the program, and you will be subject to our standing refunds and withdrawals policy.  If LaunchX cancels the program, we would provide refund options that would include the program fees and deposits paid to LaunchX.  LaunchX is unable to reimburse unbilled expenses, including airfare.
